Monthly Organic Grocery Survey: Sept. 2011

September 7, 2011  Author: Staff

Welcome to our second monthly survey of grocery markets in Boulder, Colorado that sell a wide variety of organic items. All prices are for September 1, 2011. All items are organic. If the market had a similar “natural” item but not an organic one, we considered that particular item “Not Available” (N/A). The products listed represent the lowest prices we could find for that particular item (including club card discounts).

A quick note about some of the prices: In some cases, buyers had to purchase two of a particular item (bread and cheese) to get the lowest price. With bread, to get the best price, you had to spend two dollars more for two loaves than you would have to purchase one loaf by itself, so it probably makes sense to buy two loaves and stick one in the freezer. At one market, however, to receive the lowest price per pound on cheese, you had to spend an additional $6.50 and buy a two-pound block of cheese. Paying that additional $6.50 may or may not be a great value—it depends on how much cheese you (and your family) eat.

The goal of our monthly grocery survey is to inform our readers, not to bias their shopping decisions. Obviously, the prices for groceries in Boulder may have no reflection on what these items cost in your neighborhood markets—these items may not even be available in your neighborhood. We also recognize that purchasing organic food is a luxury not everyone can afford. Still, we hold locally grown/raised organic groceries as the gold standard.

We are very interested to hear about the cost and availability of these items in your local grocery stores, so please take a minute to leave us a comment regarding this report.

Look for this monthly organic grocery survey as a way of tracking the cost of organic food (at least in Colorado).

Live well, eat well, bon apetit!
